Today I am Thankful For...
...Josh. Who purchased these flowers for me on Sunday night when I was having tremendous tooth pain... and gave me a reason to use my new $5 thrift store vase.

Our Weekend With Irene
As it turns out, we did not lose power for more than one second at a time. However, we did not have cable/internet for about three days. This made it pretty difficult to do my grad school work... which is why I am writing this and taking a break from reading boring articles right now.
Although we were expecting the worst Saturday morning, here is the view we had from our deck on Friday night:
Irene was quite the popular girl, but she ain't that great. Don't get me wrong: I saw the disaster that is Vermont. I am praying for those people. But seriously, this is the extent of our hurricane damage:

Irene was quite the popular girl, but she ain't that great. Don't get me wrong: I saw the disaster that is Vermont. I am praying for those people. But seriously, this is the extent of our hurricane damage:
Yeah, that's my poor crepe myrtle out front. With one amputated arm. Remember my friend, M, that I talked about in this post? Well, she and her fiance live in our old townhouse in Salisbury. They were under a mandatory evacuation. So they stayed the weekend with us. It actually turned out to be a great weekend. We watched movies, drank beer, played games, drank wine, did the puzzle I bought, and drank whiskey. All in all, it was a good time. We didn't go outside, though, because our trees were sideways. Our neighbor's tree (and many others in Salisbury) actually fell down completely. And there were some tornadoes about 30 miles north in Delaware and one in our county as well. But everyone is safe and sound.
Today was the first day of school! I went yesterday to set my room back up after tearing it down in hurricane preparation. It was a very pleasant day. Not very stressful, not chaotic, and altogether "good". My classroom is really cool this year, with "Under the Sea" as our theme. Josh's schools were closed today. Ocean City is in his county and they got pounded pretty good, so they were busy cleaning up today. Josh's first day will be tomorrow. He is excited because he starts out his year with a 3-day week (no school on Friday--labor day), then a 4-day week (no school Monday--Labor Day), and finally a 5-day week. He is lucky.
I originally wanted to finish a spray painting project this weekend, but obviously that was out of the cards for me. Now I am going to finish reading for grad school, take a hot bath, and go to bed! I am exhausted!

One Whole Year :-)
Yesterday, Josh and I celebrated our one-year-anniversary! We celebrated with a budget-friendly day! That's what happens when you buy a house, guys. Budget-friendly anniversary celebrations!
We woke up, had our usual breakfast, and went to the gym. I took a Zumba and a yoga class (which were awesome, by the way). We came home, took a nap, got all prettied-up, and drove to West Ocean City. My favorite OC restaurant, The Shark on the Harbor, offers $5.99 lunch specials every day! They are a local and organic restaurant with an incredible chef and their menu is always changing and original. The best part is that there are lunches for $5.99 or lunches for $26 and everywhere in between. The same goes with their dinners and desserts. Lots of choices for everyone, but everything is delicious. They also serve local craft beers.
On our way home, we stopped at the furniture store and picked out a couch and love seat that we want to buy, but haven't done yet. Then we stopped at Panera and got some coffee (with a gift card). Then we stopped at Starbucks and got some coffee beans (with a gift card). We went home and Josh made us dinner. He made omelets with green pepper, onion, and tomato. That's right. We had omelets on our first anniversary.
We had free movie tickets so we went and saw Hangover Pt. 2 late last night. It was pretty funny at times, but not a fall-out-of-your-chair-with-laughter movie.
All in all, it was a great day. In one year, we got married, moved to another state, both started new jobs, started grad school (well, one of us), finished our new jobs, bought a house and moved again! But we are happy and excited to get to work on our new house.

The Night Before His First Program
Josh's first school program is tonight. He is super excited and nervous and I am too! His whole fourth grade is performing. Students are reading The Night Before Christmas as narrators and every few stanzas a different class will perform a song. Most of them were written or adapted by Josh, me, and his students to fit the story.
One of the classes is even performing a longways set dance as the "reindeer" on the sleigh. They will be wearing reindeer antlers with bells! All of the other kids are going to be wearing "Christmas Eve" attire. A.K.A. Pajamas. It should be super cute.
Programs are scary and nerve-wracking. We, as teachers, get all worked up and try to make everything perfect for a bunch of 6 year olds! They end up performing a stellar program full of great musicianship (especially for little kids). Meanwhile, all the parents remember is the cute kid in the front who just stood there and waved to his mom. I will have to remind myself of that in two weeks for my program!

Christmas!
It's December! Yay! I have never been so excited about Christmas in my life. Not even as a kid. I am excited to see my family and spend time. I am excited to spend time with a new family. And I am excited to make some memories for our first Christmas :-)
When Josh and I got back from my mom's on Saturday, we got home, brought the stuff inside, and got right back in the car and went shopping. We got all the decorations for our first tree and a tree stand. We also picked up a few gifts for some family.
On Sunday, we bought our first tree (it's real!) and set it up. I also set up my little, tiny, fake tree that my grandma and pap gave to us/made for us last year when we didn't have any room in our apartment for a real tree. It sits in a window upstairs and looks beautiful! Then I baked some chocolate chip cookies with Hershey's Special Dark chocolate chips (Thought you would like that, Kathi). We did all of this while listening to Christmas music, of course!
On Monday I wrapped some of the gifts and put them under the tree and we strung the lights. We were still kind of waiting for the branches to fall a bit before we put the decorations on. We also put a wreath on the door, put the stockings up, and added a few of my grandma's ceramic decorations that she made. And I bought my first Christmas cards to send out... I got good ones, too :-)
And Tuesday we actually put the decorations on our tree! It looks a little silly without a tree topper or skirt, but it's our first one, so take it easy on us!

A Good Day For Josh
Today we traveled the 27 miles down to Josh's new school. He got to see his room, look around, meet with the principals, and hear some great news. And I got to do it all with him!!!
His principals basically told him that they wanted him to do anything that he wanted with these kids (Grades 4-7). He can just do drum ensembles, choirs, dancing, ANYTHING. He is jumping into a music class which was not structured or set up to involve the kids. So the administration's goal is: Get the kids involved. They have even offered Josh an extra two hours after school (paid) to start extra music programs which can be available to all of the underprivileged kids FOR FREE. They said that last year 86% of the entire school showed up all year. Not kidding.
So we were excited to see Josh's room. But... it was a mess. There is literally few usable items because most of the (cheap) instruments are so old and banged up that they will probably need to be thrown out. We took some pictures so that we will have 'before' and 'after' pictures later. Here is what we saw today:
On the VERY bright side, his principal basically told him that they will pay for WHATEVER Josh wants. They want him to start an African Drum ensemble. Josh said, "That would be AMAZING, but honestly, it would be incredibly expensive to purchase ALL of the instruments this year for that many students." Do you know what they said? "Okay. How about if we buy all of those and give you a couple thousand dollars extra?" Uhhhhh.... needless to say, I am sojealous proud of him and excited for his year to start!

Josh got the job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will spend the rest of the evening (and possibly eternity) celebrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, God. We REALLY needed this :-)

It's Official...
...We are moving to Salisbury, MD!!!
I accepted a job at Pemberton Elementary School about two months ago but was waiting a while for an official announcement... as if I am a celebrity or something ridiculous.
Josh and I spent Monday and Tuesday in Salisbury looking for a place to live and found the most adorable, awesome townhouse. I just can't wait to move in!
Here's the kicker. Crime rates in Salisbury are high. The city used to be beautiful, and now it is pretty ghetto. Including the neighborhood of our new home. But if truthfully was the best we could find! We actually had to submit to criminal background checks to be tenants of this place!
Regardless, I am super excited to move and I can't wait to start a new life in a new place in our adorable new home. My school is awesome. My new job is awesome.
Josh has applied for a few jobs in the area and is still looking for something. He actually has an interview on Wednesday and I am so excited for him!
We are exactly 30 minutes away from Ocean City. Which is cool. And there will always be plenty of stuff to keep us occupied... I am particularly excited about the huge organic farmer's market.
Just onnneeee little thing: We know absolutely NO ONE. I have a few family members a little north of us, but in our town: nothin'... nada zip. So if you... yes, you... would like to come visit us, PLEASE DO. We have a guest bedroom and can't wait for it to be occupied. I will make you dinner, I promise.
We are moving on Monday! Soon after I get everything settled in our new home, I will post pictures. Eek. Can't wait!

My Fourth Confession!
I have yet another confession to make...
I am SCARED TO DEATH to walk down the aisle!!!
Let me make myself clear...
1. I am so very happy to (almost) finally be married to my (future) husband.
2. I am so excited to finally have the wedding day I have been planning for.
3. Just thinking about the cake, dancing, flowers, family, friends, etc. makes the butterflies in my stomach start to flutter.
However,
The idea of everyone looking at me all at once scares the pants off of me! What if I cry? What if I sneeze? What if I fart? What if I get so consumed with everyone else looking at me that I forget why I am here? What if I laugh (which I often do when I am nervous)? What if I drop my bouquet? What if I trip and fall on my face? And my nose bleeds onto my new, expensive, white dress...?
Wait. This is ridiculous. I am probably going to come through those doors with my dad, see Josh, and forget that everyone else is there. I will be so happy that I am walking toward my future husband that I will have a huge, genuine smile on my face and be so excited to marry my best friend.
...just pray that I don't trip.

41 days!
Time is going by so quickly!
Today I went to Elder-Beerman where Josh works and met some of the makeup ladies that work there. Josh asked them if I could come in to get some makeup tips and pointers. They were all so excited!!!
HAHA!!! Just kidding. I told her I wanted something subtle, but classy. And something that would last and look good in pictures.
Brenda used all Clinique makeup and wrote everything down that she did... and I will say... it looked amazing! She added tons of stuff that I have never even heard of. It was subtle, but beautiful and I basically just looked enhanced. I think I am going to take the list of the products and colors she used and take it to another Clinique representative in Cumberland and have her do it on my wedding day! I don't normally wear much makeup, so I was getting kind of nervous of applying myself. Basically because I don't really know what to do!

My Crippled Body, Heart, and Brain
Maria N. Thomas:
Josh and I have been so busy. It is so exhausting. Our schedule for a few days:
Yesterday (Tuesday): Went to work all day. Came home and packed. Left for Cumberland. Spent the evening at my mom's.
Today (Wednesday): Drove to Hagerstown, MD. Had interviews for jobs that are not even posted. Drove back to Cumberland. Visited my (too young) grandfather who has lung cancer. Drive back to Morgantown. Had a meeting with my Home Group from church. Came home. Got a scary phone call about my family. Booked a hotel for tomorrow.
Tomorrow (Thursday): Go to school and work all day. Then drive to Salisbury, MD after school. 6-hour trip. We will get there a little after 10pm. Stay in a gross, cheap hotel.
Friday: We both have interviews early in the morning. Then we will drive the 6 hours back to Morgantown.
Saturday: Wake up and drive to Fairmont to babysit a 6-month-old and 20-month-old all day. Drive home that night.
Sunday: Sunday school teaching in the morning. Then go to church. Then drive to Pittsburgh to watch the PSO. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS CONCERT SINCE I WAS BORN. **More about this below... Drive home from Pittsburgh Sunday night.
Monday: Go to work. I have a phone interview Monday morning during my plan time for another job. Then teach all day.
Tuesday: Election Day. No School. PTFO. (Pass the eff out)
**Note about the PSO concert: When I was a junior in college I took what was probably the most demanding class of my life. But here's the thing: after being in the class for about 10 weeks, I stopped caring. So during my lecture time 3 days per week, I would sit at my desk and make lists. I decided to make a Bucket List. Nothing too ridiculous... I didn't want to climb the tallest mountain or jump out of an airplane or anything. My list, after careful reflection over a period of a few weeks, only totaled about 25 things. Two of these things were: See the Sibelius Violin Concerto performed live. See Shostakovich Five performed live. A stipulation: These will only count if they are performed by reputable orchestras with great conductors and horn sections. This weekend, the Pittsburgh Symphony is playing a concert. Here is the program:

Root Beer Floats!
Last evening Josh and I met with our wonderful pianist, Lya, to pick our wedding music. On the way home I spoke to my little brother, Noah, on the phone to hear that he was eating a root beer float. So Josh and I U-turned our car to the grocery store.
I have been trying really hard to eat healthy and exercise in preparation for wedding stuff... so I got diet root beer and Light Vanilla Ice Cream. I am pretty sure it was still really bad for me. So I had one yesterday and today. Darn.
In addition to the root beer floats, I met with my bible study group tonight over a camp fire, light beer, and s'mores. Darn.
Also--I have received 5 RSVPs for the wedding! We will officially have at least 12 people at our wedding! :-)

You May Now Kiss The Bride
This week was a big wedding week!
*Bryana mailed the bridal shower invitations on Tuesday. I am SO excited to go to the shower and see friends. I am also SUPER excited to make some food or candy for the shower :-)
*Josh and I both picked a weekend for bachelor/bachelorette parties.
*I mailed the wedding invitations. There is no turning back now. People will come. I will be so excited the day that I start receiving some RSVPs in the mail!!!! I am just waiting for the day... hopefully a few will be back next week.
*Josh picked up his wedding ring today.
*All of the tuxes will be ordered in a day or two.
Just a few more things to do before we are Mr. and Mrs. Mengel!

An Exciting Week!
Such an exciting and jam-packed week.
Sunday: My first Sunday teaching The Incredibles, a Sunday School class at my church made up of autistic children. I spent the majority of the rest of the day relaxing. Well needed. Had the most delicious sushi for dinner.
Monday: Back to school. Writing Assessment week. I have to be quiet this week. Trying some new and pretty cool "quiet" projects with the kids. Put a chicken salsa corn soup in the crock pot. Went to Zumba!
Tuesday: Starting packing up my room at school for the end of the year. Worked out. Went shopping for wedding stuff with Josh. Had dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
Wednesday: Getting a new student at school. She will be in my favorite class, the class that I teach made up of 4 (now 5) students with autism. I literally cannot wait to meet her. For some odd reason, I feel like I am adopting a child or something. I will only see the girl twice per week! Then the girls from my home group are coming over to help me finish my wedding invitations. Then we have home group.
Thursday: Lauren and Eli are coming over for dinner. I am making lasagna and garlic bread. SOOO excited!
Friday: Going out for a friend's birthday... should be fun.
Saturday: Orff workshop in the morning. Then an old friend from high school is coming to Morgantown to hang out!!! I literally cannot wait for this! We haven't spent time together in about 3 years! Mallory, Christine, and I are hopefully going to do some fun stuff :-)
Sunday: My second week with the Incredibles. Then lunch at Red Lobster for another friend's birthday. And hopefully mailing the invitations :o) IS it just me, or does mailing the invitations seem like a HUGE step??? It seems like the Point of No Return!!!!

Monday: Back to school. Writing Assessment week. I have to be quiet this week. Trying some new and pretty cool "quiet" projects with the kids. Put a chicken salsa corn soup in the crock pot. Went to Zumba!
Tuesday: Starting packing up my room at school for the end of the year. Worked out. Went shopping for wedding stuff with Josh. Had dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
Wednesday: Getting a new student at school. She will be in my favorite class, the class that I teach made up of 4 (now 5) students with autism. I literally cannot wait to meet her. For some odd reason, I feel like I am adopting a child or something. I will only see the girl twice per week! Then the girls from my home group are coming over to help me finish my wedding invitations. Then we have home group.
Thursday: Lauren and Eli are coming over for dinner. I am making lasagna and garlic bread. SOOO excited!
Friday: Going out for a friend's birthday... should be fun.
Saturday: Orff workshop in the morning. Then an old friend from high school is coming to Morgantown to hang out!!! I literally cannot wait for this! We haven't spent time together in about 3 years! Mallory, Christine, and I are hopefully going to do some fun stuff :-)
Sunday: My second week with the Incredibles. Then lunch at Red Lobster for another friend's birthday. And hopefully mailing the invitations :o) IS it just me, or does mailing the invitations seem like a HUGE step??? It seems like the Point of No Return!!!!

Oh, Oh, Oh, Woke Up Today...
We are going to Baltimore tomorrow!!!

We are staying in The Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotel.
We are going to a huge MD job fair Saturday morning.
Why do I love staying in hotels? I don't know. Maybe because there is a pool.

Birthday!
Josh and I have a busy week. And it's my Spring Break week. Ugh.
Josh's Birthday is tomorrow, but we are celebrating today :-) He is on his way home from work now. I have his birthday gifts on the living room floor waiting for him! I got him really nice manly heavy beer mugs. He really wants them! And both of Ron White's books. I didn't even know he wrote books... whatever. That's what the kid wanted.
Tomorrow Josh works all day, then we are going to Cumberland to get my wedding gown altered. WOO-HOO. Thursday we are going to meet with our pastor for our pre-marital class and then I am meeting with some friends and family to discuss bridal shower plans. THEN we have a meeting with the people form our reception hall to finalize plans.
Friday we have a second interview in Washington County!!!!!! I can't wait :-) I actually get really excited about interviewing now! Never thought I would say it.
Then we are headed to York for a few days to visit and watch the Mountaineers in the Final Four.
On Sunday, we are going to Cumberland for Easter with my family. Then back home... and my Spring break is over :-(
I can tell that time will fly fast. Boo-hoo.
But only 89 days til the wedding!

Un Dia Feliz--The First Day of Spring
Yesterday was the best day EVER.
I woke up nice and early (for a Saturday), watched some Saturday morning TV on the couch and had a cookie and milk for breakfast.
Then Josh woke up and it was so nice out that we spent some time outside cleaning our porch and making it look pretty again from the gross winter.
Then a nice shower and I wore pretty spring clothes.
We cleaned the entire inside of the house (fairly quickly) and did all the laundry. All while the windows were open blowing a light and wonderful spring breeze throughout the apartment.
For lunch, I cut up tons of vegetables. Cherry tomatoes, celery, cauliflower, baby carrots, cucumbers, and peppers... all with ranch vegetable dip... mmmm. Our own vegetable buffet tray for a spring lunch. I paired that with my fresh brewed berry iced tea :-)
After that, Josh and I started a game of Monopoly on the living room floor while watching episodes of The Office. After about TWO HOURS, Josh went to get ready for work.
After he left, I did my workout routine... 50 minutes of core and abs! It hurts so bad--still. Then I showered and put my spring clothes back on.
I met Kirsten at The Outback Steakhouse, which I haven't been to since 2006 (when I worked there). It was a nice long dinner. We had that great pumpernickel bread with REAL butter, a frozen peach drink from the bar, steak, shrimp, and garlic mashed potatoes. It was soooo good.
When I got home, Josh and I finished our Monopoly game (I lost), went to bed, and slept in late this morning.

Parties
This weekend Josh and I traveled to Cumberland to attend my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary party. We had no idea what we were in for. I knew that it was going to be planned well, but it was amazing! There were about 100 people there, beautiful candle centerpieces, a 3-tiered cake, waiters, great food, and tons more. Each of their 6 children gave a little speech, which was really nice. My dad catered the entire thing by himself! WOW-EE. They ended their evening by renewing their vows.
This morning we went with my cousin, Luci, to pick out a flower girl dress for her. She was so excited to buy a new dress. It is so beautiful, too. Poofy white dress with red flowers on it... soo cute.
Josh and I are going to a MICHAEL BUBLE concert in Pittsburgh in 3 days!!! We are so excited. It was our Christmas gift from Josh's parents... such a great idea. We are leaving after school on Wed. afternoon and seeing the concert that evening, which happens to be St. Patrick's Day. We probably won't get home until the middle of the night and I have to be at work on Thursday morning. Yeah, Thursday might be a rough day this week! But I am soooo excited to see him. He is one of my very favorite artists of all time.
This coming weekend I am finally having my jewelry party. I am really excited to do that and get some free jewelry! It is all so beautiful. I never used to be a fan of jewelry. I would find one necklace and one pair of simple earrings that I really liked and I would wear them everyday. Now I am excited every day to pick out jewelry to match my outfit! So I hope lots of people are able to come to the party.
Yes, that is the extent of our very exciting life.

It's 70 degrees!
A look at my day:
Crap. This morning I woke up late. I got to school on time. Crap. I realized that I left my lunch at home. It was too late to go back. Oh, I will just call Josh and ask him to drop it off this afternoon. Crap. I forgot my phone, too.
I am walking up the steps in my new pretty shoes. Already I have three compliments on them. I get upstairs... Crap. I already have three blisters from them.
Oh well, at least I have a long plan period this morning to get all that stuff done that's been on the to-do list for a while. Crap. Vice-principal asks me to go watch another class while the teacher is in a meeting. Planning time--gone.
THEN---all was better.
Good lessons. Day went by fast. I took my last class (of 2 students) outside to play on the playground this afternoon. It was so nice outside! Came home, ate something for lunch and took a nap. Woke up and went to zumba (yay). Came home and made pork chops and asparagus for dinner. Watched the new episode of The Office with Josh. Did the dishes... [don't ever tell Josh, but I enjoy doing the dishes in the evening. Sometimes I complain about it, but it's just because he never does them. It's me standing my ground.] Now I am watching The Marriage Ref, which is a ridiculous show, but kind of funny. Then I will watch Chelsea Lately (my favorite) and THEN the world premiere of the 9-minute music video "Telephone" by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce at 11:30. woot.
